Hardened and Secure OS
Hardened and Secure OS
Based on the popular Linux open source kernel that has stood up to scrutiny among security researchers, the Barracuda Spam Firewall operating system is hardened for maximum security and stability. In addition to thorough internal testing, Barracuda Networks credits the community of "white hat" security researchers that continually work with security vendors to uncover and resolve potential vulnerabilities in both the Linux operating system and its associated utilities. While the vast majority of technology in the Barracuda Spam Firewall is proprietary, Barracuda Networks seeks to leverage secure and functional open source alternatives whenever possible.

Outbound Email Filtering
Outbound Email Filtering
All Barracuda Spam Firewall models incorporate essential outbound filtering techniques including attachment scanning, virus filtering, rate controls and encryption. These features help organizations to ensure that all outgoing email is legitimate and virus-free.

MS Exchange / LDAP Accelerator
MS Exchange / LDAP Accelerator
An LDAP lookup that will work with any LDAP server. The Accelerator protects your mail server from dictionary attacks by using an LDAP query to check that the recipient of a new message has a valid mailbox on your mail server.
If the LDAP query doesn't return a result, the appliance generates an NDR (nondelivery report) and returns the mail to the sender without wasting cycles on your mail server and consuming valuable resources.

Per User Settings & Quarantine
Per User Settings & Quarantine
Each user has access to edit and maintain his/her own preferences, including block lists ("blacklists") and allow lists ("whitelists").
Each user has his/her own quarantine inbox, setup and hosted automatically by the Spam Firewall when messages are put into quarantine status. Quarantine notification emails can be sent daily or weekly.
This per-user policy control offers another level of granularity above competing systems which may only offer policy controls at a domain level.

Syslog Support
Syslog Support
The Spam Firewall uses syslog messages as a means of logging what happens to each message as unit processes the message. The syslog messages are sent to a text file on the Spam Firewall, as well as to a remote server configurable by the Barracuda administrator.
With the syslog messages, the administrator can perform analysis for either reporting purposes, or for a better understanding of the message processing on the appliance.

Clustering & Remote Clustering
Clustering & Remote Clustering
The Barracuda Spam Firewall supports clustering of multiple nodes for both redundancy and to increase total system capacity. For centralized management, Barracuda Spam Firewalls share configuration and policy across the cluster, and administrators can change policy or access any message received across the cluster from any individual node.
For redundancy of quarantine mail storage, all quarantined messages are stored in at least two nodes in the cluster - ensuring that messages are always available in the event that one node becomes unavailable. Barracuda Spam Firewall clusters can span geographies to facilitate redundancy across sites.

Per Domain Settings
Per Domain Settings
The per domain settings allow you to specify different settings for each domain. Settings include things such as Destination Server & Port, MX Records, Realm Name, Per-user or Global Quarantine, Spam Scoring Settings (Tag Score, Quarantine Score, Block Score), Spoof Protection, and more.
|
|
|
|
 |
Single Sign-On
Single Sign-On
Single Sign-On allows you to configure the Barracuda Spam Firewall to authorize user accounts using an LDAP, POP, or RADIUS server. With Single Sign-On, users can automatically log into their quarantine interface or the administration interface using their domain passwords instead of a password managed separately by the Spam Firewall.

|
|
|
 |
SNMP / API
SNMP / API
You can automate Barracuda Spam Firewall configurations with the flexible application programming interface (API) and system monitoring through SNMP.
The API is a set of CGI scripts that can be used to administer the Barracuda Spam Firewall in a remote manner. This is useful for tasks that happen frequently but may be difficult to perform one-by-one in the Web UI. An example of one such task is adding a domain to the list of allowed domains on the Barracuda Spam Firewall.
