Load Balancer Model Specifications

There are 4 models of the Barracuda Load Balancer currently available. The entry level model handles over 10 real servers and 100 Mbit traffic throughput, while the largest model to date handles 250 real servers with Gigabit traffic throughput, API access and high availability configurations. These specifications are not limits of the system, but are the recommended capacity.

Layer 4 Load Balancing
Direct Server Return Direct Server Return Direct Server Return is a load balancing configuration which facilitates responses to server requests being delivered directly to the network rather than being routed back through the load balancer. This configuration can be used to deliver 10x bandwidth throughput versus route-path or bridge-path modes. Configuration of Direct Server Return is easy, and uses the built-in non-ARPing loopback adapter which is included in allWindows and Linux servers.

Cookie Persistence Cookie Persistence With Layer 7 capabilities, the Barracuda Load Balancer can direct traffic and maintain session persistence for Web applications without relying on the user's IP address with session cookies. The Barracuda Load Balancer utilizes session cookies tying users to a single Web server that tracks and records personalized settings, ensuring persistence upon repeat visits to a Web site or portal. Taking advantage of cookie persistence with the Barracuda Load Balancer requires no changes to the network or the Web applications themselves.
SSL Offloading SSL Offloading To support SSL encryption of Web traffic, the Web application provider must typically undertake the cumbersome task of maintaining digital certificates on each Web server throughout the server farm. The burden increases with the need to update certificates across the server farm each year. Through SSL offloading, the Barracuda Load Balancer eliminates the operational overhead by consolidating SSL certificates associated with SSL traffic into one location for simple storage and management. The SSL offloading capability also streamlines the encryption and decryption of SSL traffic to quickly process secure online transactions without additional burden on any servers.

Programming Interface/API Programming Interface/API The Application Programming Interface (API) facilitates scripted implementation of any setting available in the Web interface. Most often used by ISPs and MSPs, this allows for load balanced services (including intrusion prevention) to be integrated into existing customer build scripts.
